Media/EventsREAD THE REVIEWSThis is a great, unexpected treasure of a story that I came across, while I was looking for something else in the library recently. Set in the time of many of the great artistic masters of Florence, during the rise and fall of the Medicis, as well as spanning the course of the Black Plague, the Inquisition, and the establishment of Florence as a great center for learning, banking and business — this book offers a tremendous historical fiction of a fascinating time in history....Ms. Slatton has proven herself a talented story teller, who is able to let the story stand for itself. And the story has the power and ability to take the reader on a true adventure through some of the greatest times of Italian history.
"Slatton was able to keep her writing elegant, detailed, but not overly dramatic or graphic. It is really in Part 2 of the novel when Slatton's talent is at its peak, and you are sucked into the Italian Renaissance, witnessing some of the most historic events in Italy's history through the eyes of one of the world's oldest men.... Her writing is very fluid and each chapter melds into each other before you realize you've read nearly half the book in a few short hours. FINAL GRADE: A"
"Immortal...is rich in language and detail.... This novel is full of supernatural elements and of course immortality....Travelling this journey with Luca was an interesting adventure. There is talk of a sequel to Immortal and I would be curious to read it."
"I went into Immortal thinking it was going to be pretty straight-forward historical fiction. It is so much more than that (which should have been obvious from the title.) There is a mystical, supernatural element to Traci Slatton's debut novel and it flirts with time travel, too. ... Luca, the 'immortal' main character was extremely well-developed. He was forgiveably flawed and easy to relate to. Slatton gives the reader other memorable, sympathetic characters. As Luca moves through is supernaturally long life, he gathers friends and enemies, and I loved the friends as much as I despised the enemies.
Immortal provides a vivid glimpse of Florence at a turbulent stage in its history. Several significant events are interwoven into the plot: the Black Death, the Inquisition, the rise of the powerful de Medici family, and the cultural revolution we know today as The Renaissance." "Impeccable history, interesting narrative, and enough fantasy to make it fun, Immortal shows us the best and worst of humanity over an intense couple of centuries."
"This first time outing for author Traci Slatton is pure genius and a pleasure to read. Her blending of alchemy, philosophy, and history into a readable story is nothing short of amazing.... It becomes harder these days for me to find a book that I can't put down but this was easily one of them."
"Luca Bastardo’s life was as exciting as it was long, almost two centuries of violence, love, and a deeply felt ache to know his family history and to find the woman he had been promised.... (Immortal) is filled with the kind of action and attention to historical detail that makes it easy for its readers to lose themselves in the Florence of the 1300-1400s, years when life may have been cheap but during which was created some of the greatest beauty ever seen by the world."
"Immortal is one of the most outstanding novels this reviewer has read in years! There is so much more to be experienced beyond this review that is riveting, provocative, beautiful, passionate, and unforgettable in this well-researched and well-written Florentine story."
"To say that IMMORTAL is like a literary feast with something for everyone may seem like hyperbole, but with all the action, romance, history, and philosophy that fill its pages, it seems like a most apt description. No matter how you classify it, it is an impressive achievement and a highly engrossing and most entertaining story."
"Ms. Slatton does an amazing job of drawing readers into her story with remarkable detail and passionate characters. The unique plot and vivid description of Florence and the surrounding area adds beauty..."
"Luca Bastardo, our long lived hero, certainly has his ups and downs, and the fun of this richly researched book is in the details — the smell of the marketplace, the color of a woman's silk dress, and the art that surrounds Luca and sustains him through some very difficult times. The secret of Luca's past isn't revealed until the very end..."
"The tale Luca shares is riveting, and heartbreaking, and gutwrenching, and exquisite...Immortal elicits powerful emotion; read it if you can appreciate the beauty of unity in heartache, if you would like to prove that "every life has meaning," if you seek guidance in finding a meaning all your own. "
"This is the debut novel of Slatton, and what a work with which to come out of the gate!... (Immortal is) a fully realized, engaging novel with an intriguing title character."
"By far IMMORTAL is assured to go down in history. This is the type of reading pleasure that only comes once in a lifetime. The entire plot wraps around the reader's heart and keeps him/her glued to the pages until the very end...."
"Do not pass Immortal up. It’s one of the best novels I’ve read since I first discovered books."
"This is Ms. Slatton’s debut novel, as such it is remarkable. IMMORTAL...is a love of life and the pursuit of happiness and acceptance of one self. This is very powerful and thought provoking. It ignites one’s sense of duty to those around us. It also teaches us about the strength of one’s own convictions."
"The characters and the emotions they invoked have never left me since I finished reading it....Traci L. Slatton has that rare gift of storytelling that draws you in and then holds you tight. This is one book you don't want to miss."
"A Perfect 10! ...Ms. Slatton's debut novel is an amazing, incredibly detailed account of the life of a man who could hold the secrets to religious history....Great dialogue and beautifully written, Immortal should be on everyone's bookshelf."
"Written with lush language that evokes medieval Italy, IMMORTAL is both a stirring romance and a look into medieval Italy. The reader is swept along on a tide of art, religion, friendships, betrayals and philosophy. Traci L. Slatton's research of detail is apparent, and she has created a masterpiece. Those lucky enough to read Immortal are left waiting for Ms. Slatton's next book and hoping that it is as rewarding a read as this one."
"While Anne Rice fans breathlessly await that last Lestat book, they would be well advised to check out Traci L. Slatton’s debut novel Immortal."
"IMMORTAL is unbelievably Traci L. Slatton's first novel. For those readers who are looking for a novel with substance, look no further. This book deserves your full devotion in reading it's entirety. It's depth and emotion leap off the pages and will keep you spellbound from beginning to end."
